Wood is a renewable natural resource, but it takes decades to fully restore forest plantations. This affects the climate and also reduces the total amount of available resources. Wood processing includes the manufacture of the main product, as well as the processing of the resulting waste. The use of production residues, which make up up to half of all incoming raw materials, will allow rational use of the planet's wood resources.
Wood processing methods
The choice of method for processing wood residues depends on the characteristics and condition of the raw materials. There are 3 groups of wood processing methods:
1.Biological;
2.Mechanical;
3.Chemical.
Biological methods
With the help of biological methods, low-quality production residues are processed: rotten and diseased parts, for example. To do this, the waste is placed in a container into which fungi, bacteriological compounds, insects are added - this contributes to fermentation. The biological reaction takes place through microbial synthesis. The result of such processing is most applicable in agriculture as protein yeast supplements. Other secondary products: ethanol, furfural, xylitol.
Mechanical methods
Mechanical processing consists in breaking wood fibers with the help of saws, planers, milling machines and tools. Wood turns into sawdust, shavings or dust, which allows it to be compacted and made into wood-based panels: chipboard, fiberboard. The crushed residues are mixed with adhesives, passed through a press, sawn into individual boards and subjected to heat treatment.
Chemical Methods
The most difficult way to process wood waste is chemical. It includes several directions, the choice depends on the type of final product, the type of wood, the condition of the residues. Chemical reactions make it possible to deeply process wood, obtaining one of the most important products - cellulose. On its basis, paper and cardboard are produced.
